International Cat Care recognises companies with cat commitment

14th October 2019

  •   News, Press Releases

At its Annual Awards ceremony on 28th September, International Cat Care (iCatCare) made special recognition to those companies whose products have made a real difference to cats in the past twelve months. This included the presentation of two new ‘Easy to Give’ awards and three new ‘Cat Friendly’ awards.

Easy to Give Award Winners 2019

The Easy to Give Awards, set up by the charity’s veterinary division the International Society of Feline Medicine (ISFM), recognise the commitment made by pharmaceutical companies in making it easier to give medication to cats. ISFM recognises that medicines which are easier to administer make life less stressful for vets, owners and feline patients alike and ensure better compliance.

The Easy to Give winners this year are:

  • Elanco for Credelio for cats
Credelio flea and tick treatment is a chewable yeast flavoured tablet which is well accepted by cats. In a three-month field study, pet owners were 100% successful in administering the product, replicated each consecutive month. In trials, Credelio was also shown to kill more than 98% of ticks within 24 hours, and more than 99% of fleas within 12 hours with all fleas killed within 24 hours, for one month. The tablets are available in two sizes according to cat size.
  • Kindred Biosciences for Mirataz
Mirataz is an ointment containing mirtazapine, which is licensed for use as an appetite stimulant for cats with unintentional weight loss. It is available as an ointment which is easily applied to the inner surface of the cat’s ear once a day. Mirataz provides a practical way to manage a cat’s weight loss without the need to administer oral medication, which can be stressful and difficult, especially in a cat with no appetite. Mirataz is licenced in the US and Kindred Biosciences are currently applying for a European licence.

These companies will be granted the use of the Easy to Give logo on advertising to the veterinary world. This brings the total number of Easy to Give awards presented, since their inception in 2005, to 51.

Cat Friendly Award Winners 2019

Five years ago, International Cat Care introduced the Cat Friendly Awards, which recognise non-pharmaceutical products which have made a real difference to cat wellbeing.

The Cat Friendly Award winners this year are:

  • Royal Canin for Pill AssistTM Cat
Royal Canin Pill Assist Cat is a tasty, easy to swallow pill pocket that has been specifically designed to help cat owners administer tablets to their cats. Pill Assist is a simple 3-step process: insert the pill, shape the product (with the hand that didn’t touch the pill) and give it to your cat. Pill Assist covers and disguises most types of tablets and can help the most uncooperative cat to take a treatment without spitting it out. This product will be launched by Royal Canin in 2020.
  • Braun for Aesculap Exacta
Aesculap Exacta is a lightweight, battery-operated clipper for accurately clipping small areas of fur. Designed for grooming smaller dogs, vets have reported it to be cat friendly due to being small, accurate, quiet and battery-operated. For cats, it means that a small area can be clipped without fuss and significantly less stress.
  • Kitty Kollar for Kitty Kollar
Kitty Kollar is a soft, washable, fabric collar designed to wear in conjunction with an oesophagal feeding tube. The kollar replaces the gauze and bandaging normally used to hold the tube in place, keeping it more sanitary, more stable (less likely to be removed by the cat), more protected against scratching and damage, and more comfortable. It is also preferred by owners who do not want to see the tube in their cat’s neck and is less restrictive than a bandage or an Elizabethan collar.
