Vets from across the globe declare their support for cats

Vets from all over the world have shown their support for an innovative strategy to improve feline welfare.
The ‘International Declaration of Responsibilities to Cats’, developed by International Cat Care, unites all the different entities responsible for feline welfare, from owners to governments. This document outlines how each of these individual bodies can play their part to protect and improve feline welfare, and crucially, the ways in which they can work together to make a change. Real progress can only happen if a cooperative and coordinated approach is taken.
International Cat Care (iCatCare) is asking people to support the Declaration by signing it online. The number of signatures will help iCatCare show the world how many people care about cats, want their welfare to be improved, and agree that we need a collaborative way forward to help the global population of cats, both owned and unowned.
The International Society of Feline Medicine (ISFM) 2018 European Feline Congress, held in Sorrento, Italy, saw delegates signing the Declaration and demonstrating their support by adding a message to a huge signature banner. Reading ‘I’ve just signed the International Declaration of Responsibilities to Cats because…’, the banner became packed with reasons why vets from all over the world believe that cats deserve a better future. These reasons included: ‘The needs of cats are underappreciated, even by those who love them’; ‘Because each cat deserves to live an amazing life’; ‘As pets, cats give us their all. They deserve no less, from all of us.’ The delegates recognised the need of the veterinary profession to work together with other entities to improve the lives of all cats, whether they live in our homes or on the streets. As one put it, ‘Welfare is more than just medicine’.
The Declaration is a truly international document. It has been translated into eight languages (Dutch, French, Hebrew, Indonesian, Italian, Portuguese, Slovenian and Spanish), with more translations in preparation. Currently it has gained over 27,000 signatures from people in over 100 countries.
