At an awards ceremony at Kensington Roof Gardens in London on July 15, International Cat Care revealed the overall winner of its 2016 Photographic Competition 'Cat Naps'.
The winner is Johanna Vaurio-Teräväinen from Finland, for her stunning picture of her cat Pitkis. The judges loved the artistry and colours in Johanna's photograph, but they were also won over by Pitkis's unusual sleeping position and complete tranquility, showing that cats really will sleep anywhere. As overall winner, Johanna will receive £500 and a year’s subscription to Your Cat magazine. Her winning image will also appear on the cover of the charity's 2017 'Cat Naps' calendar.
Johanna's picture was one of 3,400 pictures submitted by photographers from 51 different countries to this year's iCatCare Photographic Competition. The judges from iCatCare and Your Cat magazine had already whittled the selection down to twelve winners, all of which will appear in the 'Cat Naps' calendar, with the overall winner finally being revealed at the awards ceremony. Unfortunately Johanna was unable to attend on the day to receive her prize, however three of the other winners were at the event where they were presented with framed certificates. All finalists also received £100 each, a selection of iCatCare merchandise, together with copies of the 'Cat Naps' calendar.
The calendar will go on sale in the autumn with all funds raised going directly to the charity. The calendar will also feature a 13th winner, chosen as part of a public vote, together with a poster with some of the best competition entries.
