In recognition of the difficulty of finding an online resource that gives cat owners reliable and valid information on cat care, health and behaviour, the World Small Animal Veterinary Association (WSAVA) has endorsed International Cat Care’s website information for owners (www.icatcare.org/advice).
In a statement, WSAVA said that they ‘recognise that current and medically accurate information is an important component of patient care for both veterinary healthcare teams and pet owners alike. To this end, WSAVA fully endorses the information contained within the owner-oriented area of the International Cat Care website’.
This follows a UK survey of vets by the British Veterinary Association, which revealed that 98% of respondents believe their clients’ behaviour is influenced by what they find online. In some cases owners have brought their cats to their vet after reading about a ‘suspected disease’ online to find that the cat is completely healthy, while other cases show owners misdiagnosing a case often causing their cats to suffer longer than necessary.
Providing a reliable source of information that owners can refer to, that helps educate them in the correct way, is beneficial to cats and their welfare, and this is what WSAVA believes the International Cat Care website achieves.
