International Cat Care (iCatCare) is delighted to announced the winners of its 2017 ‘Street Cats’ photography competition which will feature in the charity’s 2018 calendar.
Congratulations go to the following photographers: Jonas Chan (Hong Kong), Mei Catherall (UK), Chi Keung Wong (Hong Kong), Rachel Hunter (UK), Catan Ngan (Hong Kong), Seyed Mohammad Fallah Firouzkouhi (UK), Christine Lam Ying Loi (Hong Kong), Igor Taranenko (Ukraine), Tulyawat Mahawong (Thailand) and Heiko Damme (Germany).
The overall winner, announced at iCatCare’s Annual Awards Event on 14th July in London, is Catan Ngan from Hong Kong. His stunning image of a Hong Kong community cat wowed the competition judges with its striking composition, colours and the sheer presence of the cat photographed. Catan will receive £500 in prize money and his image will grace the cover iCatCare’s 2018 calendar.
This year’s competition was launched in April and ran for six weeks to raise awareness of the plight of street cats – also thought of as stray cats, feral cats or community cats – in order to inspire change. Over 2,100 images from photographers in 56 different countries were sent in and the variety of images was staggering, from pictures of cats in relatively good condition living in communities where Trap Neuter Return (TNR) is practised, to heart wrenching images of cats in very poor condition.
The iCatCare judges were looking for images which really captured the character of these amazing cats surviving without owners and which reflect the reality of a life on the streets.
Eve Davies, who ran this year’s ‘Street Cats’ photography competition said: ‘Although picking the winners is always hard, it’s a testament to the high quality of the entries we receive. It can be a difficult job but it’s hugely rewarding because of all the wonderful photographs that we find for our annual charity calendar which is sold to raise funds for our welfare work.’
