iCatCare Annual Awards celebrate cat innovations and achievements

International Cat Care (iCatCare) hosted its Annual Awards ceremony at Kensington Roof Gardens in London on 14th July, where it celebrated the companies and individuals which have made a real difference to cats in the last twelve months. This included the presentation of four new ‘Easy to Give’ awards (plus two for product updates) and five new ‘Cat Friendly’ awards.

The afternoon also celebrated three individuals with the highest marks on the charity’s distance education courses and announced the twelve winners from its 2017 Photography Competition, including the overall winner. The awards were kindly supported by Ceva, Agria and Royal Canin.

Easy to Give Award Winners 2017

The Easy to Give Awards recognise the commitment made by pharmaceutical companies in making it easier to give medication to cats. iCatCare recognises that medicines which are easier to administer make life less stressful for vets, owners and feline patients alike and ensure better compliance. Each Easy to Give Award is the considered decision of members of the International Cat Care feline expert veterinary panel as well as feedback from their clients.

The Easy to Give winners this year are:

  • Amflee Combo spot-on solution for cats (and ferrets) from KRKA
This is a combination spot-on containing Fipronil and S-Methoprene effective against fleas, ticks, biting lice and flea larvae and eggs. It also prevents environmental flea burden and has a pipette for ease of use.
  • Bravecto for Cats from MSD Animal Health
A spot-on product with active ingredient Fluralaner using a ‘twist n’use’ applicator which treats fleas and ticks and lasts for 12 weeks (most other products only last for 1 month, so less applications are required). There are 3 products for small, medium and large cats.
  • Thyronorm Oral Solution for Cats from Norbrook
Contains thiamazole and can be used for the stabilisation of hyperthyroidism in cats prior to surgical thyroidectomy and for the long term treatment of feline hyperthyroidism. Thyronorm comes as a solution with a syringe to give the product directly into the mouth of the cat.
  • Milpro for Cats and Milpro for small cats and kittens
A broad spectrum wormer for protection against most common intestinal worms with two active ingredients (milbemycin and praziquantel).
  • Effipro Duo Spot-on solution from Virbac
Protects pets from fleas and ticks and from household flea infestations - pyriproxyfen and fipronil combination.
This is a product update of a previous Easy to Give award winner.
  • Rilexine from Virbac
Cefalexin tablets for oral administration in cats and dogs. A broad-spectrum bactericidal antibiotic and a 1st generation cephalosporin.
This is a product update of a previous Easy to Give award winner.

These companies will be granted the use of the Easy to Give logo on advertising to the veterinary world. These bring the total number of Easy to Give awards presented, since their inception in 2005, to 45.

Cat Friendly Award Winners 2017

The Easy to Give awards are confined to prescription only medicines (POMs) or methods of delivering POMs. International Cat Care also recognises other products that have made a real difference to cat wellbeing and welfare – these are the Cat Friendly Awards.

  • Catit Senses 2.0 Self Groomer with Catnip from Rolf C Hagen UK
The self groomer provides easy-access rubbing pleasure for cats, while the durable plastic bristles simultaneously remove loose and shedding hair. The brush can be snapped in and out of its frame for simple maintenance. The Catit Self Groomer affixes easily to either flat or corner surfaces and it includes adhesive strips and a supply of catnip.
  • EasyPill Cat Putty from VetExchange
Provides a highly palatable pliable divisible treat in providing easy administration of medication for cat owners. Hidden within the treat the tablet attaches itself to the putty and provides a useful aid in administration.
  • Mouth Gag Set from Eickemeyer Veterinary Equipment
Traditionally when cats have been anaesthetised a gag has been used to keep the mouth open that has been spring-loaded – this leads to the mouth being held open very widely which has recently been recognized to cause blindness in some cats. These novel mouth gags consist of two cylinders that can be adjusted via a thread in their length. With this feature the mouth gags can be easily adapted to the mouth of the patient.
  • Feliscratch by Feliway from Ceva
A synthetic copy of the feline interdigital semiochemical (FIS) naturally produced by cats and deposited on places when they scratch which encourages them to scratch there again. The product is used to redirect scratching behaviour onto a desired location.
  • DOC and Phoebe’s 5-a-day Feeder from Feline Environmental Enrichment Design Company
An innovative way of feeding cats which is reflective of natural cat feeding behaviour. It improves behavioural health by giving cats opportunities to replicate natural hunting and exploratory and feeding behaviour, reducing obesity, boredom and provide exercise and mental stimulation. The product is in the form of numerous mice which carry the food and can be hidden around the house.
