Feral street cat wins ‘Beauty of Cats’ photography competition

A photograph of a Hong Kong street cat, affectionately known as 'Shy', has taken first place in the 2015 'The Beauty of Cats' photography competition.

The cat charity International Cat Care, who run the competition, this week revealed all 12 winning photographs which will now feature in the charity's brand new 2016 calendar – with Shy on the cover as the overall winner.

The competition, which ran from March until May of this year, attracted photographers from 40 different countries, collectively submitting nearly 2000 stunning cat images. This is the third year International Cat Care, in conjunction with Your Cat and Digital Photographer magazines, has run the competition and the judges said the quality and beauty of this year’s entries was truly breathtaking.

After much consideration, the judges narrowed down the entries to a shortlist of 50, from which the 12 winning images and the overall competition winner were chosen. The standard this year was incredibly high, with photos ranging from adorable kittens to feral street cats. The judges agreed that regardless of age, breed or lifestyle of the cat, the winning photographers had all captured the true beauty of their feline subjects.

The overall winning photographer is Hon Wa Yip, a trap-neuter-return (TNR) volunteer from Hong Kong. His winning photo is of a feral street cat, he affectionately named ‘Shy’, who he met during a TNR programme and still brings food to. He captured his winning photo on a day when Shy was being cautious of his approaching human visitor until curiosity got the better of him. Hon Wa Yip was surprised and hugely pleased to be the overall winner, having been amongst last year’s winners. When asked, he said it was amazing news and hopes that this will draw attention to feral cats, the problems they face and ways in which they can be helped, including TNR. Hon Wa Yip will receive £500 and a year’s subscription to Your Cat and CatCare magazines, as well as having his picture on the cover of International Cat Care’s charity calendar.

The other 11 winning photographs to appear in the calendar came from all corners of globe, including Poland, Canada, Finland and France, making it a truly international cat calendar. The images can be viewed at www.icatcare.org/photography-competition. The calendar is being sold to raise funds for International Cat Care and will be available to purchase this September from the charity’s online shop website, www.icatcare.org/shop.
