We continue to strive for a better world for cats, bringing together all those responsible for feline welfare, from owners to governments.
Claire Bessant, International Cat Care’s chief executive, attended the summer meeting of APGOCATS - the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Cats in the UK. The group looked at what issues were current and which should be prioritised to take forward - issues included air gun attacks on cats, animal cruelty sentencing, commercial breeding and sale of cats, electronic shock collars and containment fences, health and wellbeing effects of cat ownership regarding fighting loneliness, identification, rented accommodation and cats, and welfare of cats with extreme conformation or inherited defects linked to conformation.
Lord Gardiner of Kimble, the Parliamentary Under secretary of State for Rural Affairs and Biosecurity, spoke on the Government’s work to date on companion animal welfare, focusing on how it it will impact on cat welfare. He too mentioned that we must be working to insure that breeders breed away from inherited defects and get rid of extreme conformation problems.
We will continue to inform politicians in these meetings on the issues and what can be done to improve the lives of all cats, owned and unowned.
