PAULO V. STEAGALL, DVM, MS, PhD, DACVAA is an Associate professor of Veterinary Anesthesiology and Pain Management at the Université de Montréal, Canada. He earned his DVM and completed a residency at Sao Paulo State University, Brazil, then earned his MS and PhD (Anesthesiology) with emphasis on feline analgesia at the same institution. He is currently the head of a research laboratory dedicated to improving the standards of pain management in companion animals with a strong benefit to animal welfare. His laboratory developed and validated the Feline Grimace Scale, a tool that uses changes in facial expressions to assess acute pain in cats, in collaboration with other researchers at the Université de Montréal. His team investigates the use of novel, innovative pain assessment tools, analgesic therapies and techniques with immediate clinical application. He is a member of the World Small Animal Veterinary Association (WSAVA) Global Pain Council, the WSAVA Dental Guidelines Committee and he has been appointed the chair of the WSAVA Therapeutic Guidelines group. Dr. Steagall has published approximately 100 articles and several book chapters on pain management in small animals. He is the author of the book ‘Feline Anesthesia and Pain Management’.
