Dr. Pennisi graduated cum laude from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the University of Messina, Italy in 1979. Diplomated in Applied Microbiology from the Faculty of Science of the Univerisity of Messina in 1982. She was awarded a three-year scholarship from the Italian “Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche” in 1981. She awarded a permanent position in Veterinary Internal Medicine at the Institute of Veterinary Internal Medicine of the University of Messina as College Researcher (1983-1991), Associate Professor (1992-2000), Full Professor and Chair of Small Animal Medicine (2000-at present).

Dr. Pennisi heads a research laboratory for veterinary serological and microscopical investigations and has a specific interest in clinical research on feline transmissible diseases and companion animal’s vector- borne diseases. She was consultant of feline medicine at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital of the University of Messina from 2002 to 2020. She is founding member of LeishVet international association, member of the European Advirosy Board on Cat diseases and the Companion Animals Vector-Borne Diseases World Forum. She is author of some 250 papers published in peer reviewed journals as well as book chapters, and coauthored in the last 15 years many review articles and guidelines on her topics of interest.
