Gonçalo has a Veterinary Degree from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in Lisbon, (Portugal), a Masters in Clinical Ethology and Animal Welfare at the Faculty of Veterinary from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid (Spain), and a PhD in Veterinary Science from the Institute of Biomedical Science Abel Salazar in O’Porto (Portugal). He is a diplomate of the European College of Animal Welfare and Behavioural Medicine, in both sub-specialities (Behavioural Medicine and Animal Welfare Science, Ethics and Legislation). He currently works as Director of the Centre for Animal Knowledge (Centro para o Conhecimento Animal) and Professor of Animal Welfare, Behaviour and Training in Escola Superior Agrária de Elvas in the Polytechnic Institute of Portalegre (Portugal). In addition, Gonçalo lectures in many different Faculties in Portugal and around the world on the topics of veterinary behavioural medicine, animal welfare and ethics. He is a popular trainer and speaker at seminars, conferences and congresses nationally and internationally. He has published several scientific studies in animal behaviour and welfare and has been practising as a veterinary behaviourist since 2003. Gonçalo is committed to the profession of veterinary behavioural medicine and is founder and past President of PsiAnimal – Portuguese Association of Behavioural Therapy and Animal Welfare, President of the European College of Animal Welfare and Behavioural Medicine (ECAWBM) and Vice-President of the European Society of Veterinary Clinical Ethology (ESVCE).
