Ingestion is the consumption of a substance orally (by mouth). Thus both drinking and eating would be considered as ingestive behaviours. Food and/or water are taken through the mouth into the gastrointestinal tract for the provision of essential nutrients. Associated behaviours include those that occur prior to ingestion of food and indicate anticipation of food. Abnormal manifestations of ingestive behaviour comprise the consumption of non-nutritive items.
